SPEAKBAR brings state-of-the-art technology to TV speech intelligibility. Where exceptional sound meets advanced mathematics.

Speech clarity with laser-like precision

SPEAKBAR’s FOCUS™ technology works much like a focused beam of light. It electronically directs sound towards an individual viewer or a group of listeners, without physically moving the speaker.

This precise sound delivery makes voices exceptionally clear, helping you understand every word without turning up the TV volume and disturbing others.

The art of advanced mathematics

SPEAKBAR’s BeamSteering™ and BeamForming™ technologies are based on iterative mathematical equations. By repeatedly applying an algorithm, the system progressively approaches the desired solution, creating the foundation for precisely controlled acoustic effects.

SPEAKBAR’s logarithmic speaker arrangement directs sound waves towards a defined listening area by precisely controlling their amplitude, frequency response and phase. This relies on the physical principle of wave interference: when sound waves overlap, they can reinforce or cancel each other.

Hearing follows its own laws

It’s entirely natural for our hearing to change with age. The upper limit of human hearing typically decreases by around 2,000 Hz per decade, while our ability to hear lower frequencies is generally less affected. A gradual decline in hearing sensitivity is part of the natural ageing process.

But which frequencies matter most for understanding speech?

The frequencies relevant to speech range from approximately 125 Hz to 8,000 Hz. Unvoiced consonants occupy much of the higher-frequency range, between 2,000 and 8,000 Hz. These sounds are particularly important for understanding spoken language effortlessly.

That’s why SPEAKBAR offers a selection of age-optimised frequency profiles, designed to help you distinguish consonants more easily and enjoy a more comfortable listening experience.

Measuring what matters: speech intelligibility

The Speech Transmission Index, or STI, has become an internationally established benchmark for measuring speech intelligibility in professional audio systems. It expresses how clearly speech can be understood on a scale from 0 to 1.

STI is influenced by a range of factors:

  • The volume of the speech signal
  • The level of surrounding background noise
  • Room acoustics
  • Psychoacoustic masking effects
  • The loudspeaker’s ability to reproduce speech modulation
  • The loudspeaker’s directional characteristics

Conventional TV speakers typically achieve STI values between 0.4 and 0.6.

SPEAKBAR’s FOCUS™ technology achieves values well above 0.75 STI.

That is what you call “excellent speech intelligibility”.

As hearing changes, our expertise keeps growing

Behind SPEAKBAR are decades of experience in developing and implementing sophisticated speech intelligibility systems — from large places of worship and transport infrastructure to public-address and professional sound reinforcement systems.

SPEAKBAR is the latest innovation from the research and development team at Switzerland’s Vierton-Audio AG. It brings professional, precisely directed sound technology into the home for the first time.
